How does the AdWords auction work?

I haven’t realized how many things Google analyzes every time a search is made before it gives the search results. Many things needs to be taken into consideration when designing and developing a website. A quality website makes the search engine marketing more worthwhile and saves costs.

I wanted to find out more about the Google AdWords auction and how it works because after going through this chapter’s material it staid a bit unclear to me. I found this Google’s YouTube video, which explains how the auction works. I think it is a great system when it offers the most useful search results to the users, and the advertisers usually end up paying less what their original budget was. It was also remarkable that auction isn’t necessarily won with the biggest bid because the quality of the site and the ad relevance means a lot when Google ranks the sites.

Here is the video:

I think it is great that Google doesn’t only favor the sites that are paying the most money and the ads’ relevance to the users is looked after.

This reminds me about the fact that you should always remember that your website is for people, not for the search engines.

  1. Thank you for this blogpost! I think it's good to know how the AdWords really works. You save money if your website is relevant with the adwords you create. And it's not so easy (not profitable) to make distracting ads, like putting every competitors names to the adwords campaign. This also clears it up how important SEO is! It's worth to think how your clients are looking for your products or services.

  2. Thanks for bringing up this subject! I'm not that familiar with AdWords, probably because I've been too lazy to explore it... On the other hand I would probably find AdWords more interesting if I had a chance to try it out without spending my own money. Too bad we have to carry out our school projects on a zero budget. :P

  3. Than you so much for this subject! It was also a little bit confusing to me too but this video in your post explained it so well. I really like how the Google ranking system works that not always the one that pays more gets more but not with this system. I think your point that websites are for people not for SEO is really important. When we thinking SEO we might forget that there is actually people that wants to read the content or watch it. But thanks again for clearing this up for me!

  4. Riikka, what a great topic and a great blog post to open up discussion. I like the way you present the topic and that you have embedded a very relevant video.

I have excecuted Adwords -campaigns for several companies and based on my experience on my career earlier it is highly important to make sure that you do thing the "right way". By this I mean that the content of your website AND the content of the AD should have a strong correlation, and that the AD should be so appealing that people click on it, and preferably stay a long time on the landing page.

I have failed many times, learned a bit, and sometimes occasionally succeeded ;) I wish we could have some budget for these experiments one day in the courses...

All in all, as you say, Google tries to understand how humans behave and think, so always make sure you do things the right way - google will detect if you try something else.

    Thanks for the great topic!
    Ilkka
